Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

General:

What is an Argentine estancia?
An estancia is a traditional Argentine rural estate, historically dedicated to cattle and horses, where life is deeply connected to the countryside. Today, some estancias welcome guests and offer an authentic experience of Argentine rural life and culture.

How is Estancia Don Joaquín different from a hotel?
Estancia Don Joaquín is a family home and working ranch rather than a traditional hotel. Stays are informal, personal, and flexible, focusing on shared meals, horseback riding, and the everyday life of the estancia.

What is the difference between horseback riding at the estancia and the Gaucho Trail?
The Gaucho Trail is a multi-day experience, separate from the estancia stay, designed for experienced riders. It includes long days on horseback and overnight stays at more rustic rural estancias at a fixed price.

Do you have other properties?
Yes, we have another property five minuets from the estancia: Don Joaquin River Lodge and owner Diego Solanet continues working on other properties in the area.

Where is the estancia located in Argentina?
We are located in the South West of the province of Corrientes, near the city of Esquina. Please visit our Location page for more information.

How do I get there?
We can help organize your trip from Buenos Aires, including transfers to the estancia. Please visit our Location page for more information.

Can you book my bus ticket?
Yes, we can book your first-class sleeper bus ticket. The cost will be included as part of the reservation deposit.

Is there WiFi?
Yes, there is functioning WiFi in common areas and all rooms. Speed may vary due to our rural location.

Is the estancia open year-round?
Yes, we welcome guests throughout the year. Each season offers different landscapes and horseback riding experiences.

Can we choose which horse to ride?
Horses are assigned according to each rider’s experience and comfort to ensure safety and enjoyment but during your stay, you are more than welcome to switch horses if you wish (we have over 150!).

Is it recommended to bring cash?
Yes, we recommend bringing some cash for personal purchases, laundry, and tips (tips are appreciated but always optional). Most local businesses accept cards.

Do the owners live at the estancia?
Yes. The Solanet family lives at the estancia and actively participates in welcoming guests and daily life, including meals and rides.

Horseback Riding:

What type of riding is offered?
We ride in the Argentine “criollo” style: a free and functional way of riding developed by the gauchos for comfort and practicality. Even if you have experience, we will teach you to ride in the criollo style.

What kind of horses do you have?
Primarily Argentine Criollo horses and Criollo crosses, known for their calm temperament, strength, and endurance.

Are the rides accompanied by local gauchos?
Yes. All rides are accompanied by local gauchos who share their knowledge and style of riding. Some speak English. You will also be accompanied by Josefina, a member of the Solanet family.

Are all experience levels accepted?
Yes. From beginners to experienced riders. Rides are adapted to each level, and we love teaching horseback riding to those less experienced.

If my partner doesn’t ride, what can they do?
They can visit our sister lodge, Don Joaquín River Lodge, to fish for golden dorado with expert guides. We also offer a wide range of alternative activities.

How many people ride at the same time?
Rides are usually organized in small groups for safety and enjoyment, tailored to each guest’s preference.

Are groups divided by experience level?
Yes. We have enough staff to organize separate groups according to experience and preferences, maintaining a comfortable pace for everyone.

Are helmets included and mandatory?
We recommend all guests wear helmets, although it is not mandatory. If you choose not to wear one, you will need to sign a waiver. Helmets are available to borrow, but if you are traveling with children, it is necessary to bring your own.

How long are the rides?
Duration varies depending on the route and group preferences, typically between 1 and 3 hours, with longer options available.

Do we need insurance to ride?
Yes. Travel insurance that covers equestrian activities is mandatory (please verify with your insurer).

Can we saddle and unsaddle our own horses?
Riders are welcome to participate in horse handling, though it is not required, as the gauchos are always available to help.

Is there a weight limit?
Yes, the maximum riding weight is 110 kg.

What clothing should I bring?
We recommend long, comfortable pants for riding (breeches, jeans, or traditional field pants – you can buy Bombachas at the local gaucho store too!), lightweight long-sleeve shirts, sturdy closed-toe footwear (preferably flat-soled boots, though sneakers are also fine), a helmet (preferred), swimwear, layers for temperature changes, sun protection and mosquito spray, sunglasses, sun hats, and comfortable evening clothes with a light jacket (depending on seasons).

Can I wash my clothes during my stay?
